Stocking Stuffers. Did you ever want to know?

Hanging a stocking, or originally a sock or bag, Christmas eve originated in Europe. In early lore this is where gifts, if any were found. As far as we could research the beginnings of the use of Christmas stocking originated from a story about the Germanic/Scandinavian figure Odin. According to Phyllis Siefker (Author, Santa Claus, Last of the Wild Men), "children would place their boots, filled with carrots, straw, or sugar, near the chimney for Odin's flying horse, Sleipnir, to eat. Odin would reward those children for their kindness by replacing Sleipnir's food with gifts or candy." This simple tradition has survived the decades into what we have today, the Christmas stocking stuffed with nuts, fruit and small gifts.

Stocking stuffers is now a one way tradition. As much as we would like to see our kids fill their stockings with good report cards, notes telling their love for their parents or even cookies, today they are hung empty in anticipation of the stocking stuffers. Oh well.
